GCSE English Language and Literature

The aim of the English department is to identify topics that engage and enthuse students. All students at KS4 follow detailed, differentiated schemes of work which are continually reviewed by the department. Throughout KS4, students will develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing. They learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. Formative and summative assessments form the assessment focuses which are used to map individual progress. Our creative approach to lessons allows students to develop a personal style and a confidence in their own ideas and responses. Literacy is embedded into lessons and across the English curriculum. Extra English classes are available for all students.


We deliver the Edquas WJEC 9-1 English Language (Year 11) and Edquas WJEC 9-1 English Literature (Year 10);

The English language qualification allows students to be assessed on their ability to:

  • read a wide range of texts, fluently and with good understanding
  • read critically, and use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing
  • write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately
  • use grammar correctly, punctuate and spell accurately
  • acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology, and linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.


In addition, it enables learners to:

  • listen to and understand spoken language, and use spoken Standard English effectively.

Spoken language will be reported on as part of the qualification, but it will not form part of the final mark and grade.


The qualification is made up of two externally-assessed examination components and one internally assessed non-examination component.  The internally-assessed non-examination component tests spoken language skills.

Component 1: 20th Century Reading Study and Creative Prose Writing.

Component 2: 19th and 21st Century Non-Fiction Reading Study and Transactional/Persuasive Writing.

Component 3: Spoken Language (unweighted).


The English Literature qualification allows students to be assessed on their ability to:

  • read a wide range of classic literature fluently and with good understanding, and make connections across their reading
  • read in depth, critically and evaluatively, so that they are able to discuss and explain their understanding and ideas
  • develop the habit of reading widely and often appreciate the depth and power of the English literary heritage
  • write accurately, effectively and analytically about their reading, using Standard English
  • acquire and use a wide vocabulary, including the grammatical terminology and other literary and linguistic terms they need to criticise and analyse what they read.


The qualification is made up of two externally-assessed components:

Component 1: Shakespeare and Poetry

Component 2: Post 1914 Prose/Drama, 19th century prose and Unseen Poetry

Both components allow learners to show their depth and breadth of knowledge through varied assessments.  In addition, learners are required to study the following content:

  • at least one play by Shakespeare
  • at least one 19th century novel
  • a selection of poetry since 1789, including representative Romantic poetry, fiction or drama from the British Isles from 1914 onwards.


Year 9 students will have a bespoke English programme that is linked closely to both GCSE specifications and the assessment objectives required for each.

The English department also delivers Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills in English:

The English Level 1/ 2 Programme of Study offered within Key Stages 4 and 5 at Everton Free School is designed to encourage and promote all students to:

  • listen to and understand spoken language, using spoken Standard English effectively
  • enable students to become self-aware and to develop an understanding of others
  • read a wide range of texts with fluency and understanding
  • critically analyse texts in order to inform and enhance their written skills
  • write effective and coherent texts using Standard English appropriately
  • write legibly and clearly.
