Our Science curriculum for Year 11 currently follows the AQA Science A specification which allows each student to achieve a GCSE in Core Science. Three separate external exams are taken in Biology, Chemistry and Physics along with a Controlled Assessment which is an Investigative Skills Assignment. Core Science looks at scientific theory and application through topical investigations, integrated with “How Science Works”. Each unit is assessed through a one hour written examination consisting of structured and closed questions and the controlled assessment focuses on the application of practical skills. All units carry a weighting of 25%.
Our Science curriculum for Year 10 currently follows the Cambridge IGCSE in Combined Science. This gives our learners the opportunity to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics through a mix of theoretical and practical studies as well as helping learners to understand the technological world in which they live. The IGCSE is spread across two years which gives our younger learners the potential to study the extended syllabus in order to achieve a higher grade. The IGCSE is assessed through a multiple-choice paper, a written paper and a practical test.
We provide opportunities for all students achieving Level 6 or above at Key Stage 3 to study separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Alternatively, we also provide opportunities to study Entry Level Science for those students who are not yet ready to take GCSE Science.
