We believe words are a fundamental part of all learning. Every aspect of our curriculum is therefore supported by a focus on reading, writing and communication.
Many of the young people referred to our school have faced challenges with English and require increased levels of support with literacy. The school is committed to using imaginative and creative strategies to embed literacy beyond the traditional context of English, applying it in practical ways to all other areas of the curriculum: vocational and academic.
We have developed a comprehensive library for all our students, and a range of comprehensive programmes and activities.
This is a literacy intervention where we help students improve their reading capability through a programme of testing and reading books that stretch them.
Each book has a quiz at the end of it and they can see how much they have understood. We are also developing our own reward system for students who are hitting internal targets for it. Our students are reading more!
That Reading Thing
That Reading Thing is another programme for Students who need to develop their reading ability through one to one tuition. It was developed by Tricia Millar from Vancouver, who now lives on the Wirral. It is a versatile and effective tool in helping students progress quickly into confident readers, and we have seen great results.
That Reading Room
We have developed a space in Everton Free School for reading and literacy intervention. We have been using it for one to one help and a space for students to catch up on their accelerated reading!
Encouraging reading for those with high ability, members are led by a teaching assistant who chooses different books to read, study and discuss, encouraging progress as well as enjoyment of reading.
